Kamal Haasan On Having SUICIDAL Thoughts At 20: 'Film Industry Wasn't Acknowledging My Worth'
Kamal Haasan shares he had suicidal thoughts at 20 amid Vijay Antony's daughter death, actor gives a useful advice to students
The death of Vijay Antony's 16-year old daughter Meera shook the Tamil film industry. The reports suggested that the teenager took her life following academic pressure. Amidst the sad demise, during a recent college event held in Chennai, esteemed actor and politician, Kamal Haasan interacted with a gathering of students who sought his insights on navigating life's myriad challenges and pressures. Known for his proactive and engaging approach, the actor openly and enthusiastically responded to the students' questions. Nevertheless, when the conversation turned to the concerning issue of rising student suicides, Kamal Haasan drew from his personal experiences and recounted a period in his early career when he grappled with suicidal thoughts. He candidly shared, “Around the age of 20 or 21, I contemplated suicide.” The national award winning superstar also reflected on a phase in his life when he yearned for recognition and validation for his contributions to the world of cinema. He went on to reveal, “I used to lament that neither the film industry nor the art world was acknowledging my worth. During that period, I believed that if I were to pass away, the industry would regret losing such a talented artist. I even had a serious conversation about this with my mentor, Ananthu. He posed a question, 'If you are a genius, who am I?' He advised me to persist in my work and patiently await my moment.”
Giving advice to the students while talking on the topic of suicide, the 68-year-old veteran said, “I have accepted death as part of life. I don't see death and life as two different things. An endless life has no meaning or purpose. Death will come. So you don't need to rush it.”
Haasan's upcoming projects include S. Shankar's Indian 2 and Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD. In addition to these, the actor is currently in discussions about joining the cast of Mani Ratnam and H. Vinoth's upcoming films.
